  • What is Appalachian Dancing?

Knickerbocker Glory aspires to set a high standard in its public performances.  We are not a dance class.  After trying Appalachian dance at a workshop or a festival, some people may wish to join a performing team such as ours.

The dancers come from all backgrounds, and there is a wide variety of ages, but we all need to maintain high levels of fitness and stamina, attend regularly, and put in considerable effort to become proficient.

Anyone who is young and who has danced other styles may pick it up more easily, but it often takes more than a year to be ready to perform in public.  At first, a new team member will only know a few dances sufficiently well for "dancing out".

So, although there is no automatic guarantee that a dance enthusiast can become a performing member, we do welcome anyone interested to come along and try it out.  The best time to start is in the Autumn term, when more time can be spent  on teaching the basic steps.  In the Summer term we are busy rehearsing for public performances, so we can deliver our very best show.
